How much does genealogical research cost?

I have received quiet a bit feedback on my web site asking me to share the cost of my genealogical packages on the site. The problem with doing this is that every research project is different and will require varying amounts of time and purchase of certificates. I do understand however, that people would like guidelines as to the possible costs. I have therefore added rough guideline costs for some of the packages.

For each of the packages I would charge an upfront £40 to carry out an assessment of the material you already have and after this I would be in a position to confirm the actual cost of the package before undertaking the work. I hope these guidelines help. All costs are always agreed with you before I undertake the work so you don’t need to fear an unexpected invoice.

I am also happy to work at an hourly rate of £20 after the initial £40 assessment. So you can set your budget and I will match my research accordingly.

Although fascinating, genealogical research is time consuming and this becomes even more the case as you work back in time. Sometimes this research doesn’t result in any new information because the relevant sources may not have survived or your ancestors didn’t comply or for some reason were not around when the records were made. If this is the case I will still charge my fee as you are paying for my time and I need to keep the roof over my head too! I will endeavour to do my best to find alternative solutions when ever possible as I can guarantee I will become as interested in your ancestors as you are:).
